Make and Print 3D Models

Want to make — or learn how to make — a 3D model? Book time in our workshop on the first floor of Shapiro Library.

You must complete an online orientation to the Shapiro Design Lab and our module on 3D printers before you can make a reservation.

Using our workshop

After you complete the online orientation, you’ll get information on how to reserve time in the workshop.

Use of materials

Our 3D printing materials are free to use onsite in the workshop.

In exchange for the use of these materials, we’ll ask you to contribute a post about your project to our blog, Lab Notes.

Did you know? We only stock PLA filament for our 3D printing needs. This sturdy material is corn-based, which means it's biodegradable.

Our 3D printing policies

You may not use the 3D printers for unlawful purposes, or for designs that violate the following conditions:

  • Federal, state, or local law or that violates university ordinances or policies
  • Are or pose a threat of being unsafe, harmful, or dangerous
  • Are inappropriate for the library environment
  • Violate intellectual property rights, such as copyright, patent, or trademark

At our discretion, we can refuse any 3D print request. In the event that we refuse a 3D printing request, we will provide written notice of our reason for the refusal.

The Fabrication Studio in the Duderstadt Center on North Campus also has several types of 3D printers available for use by students, faculty, and staff.
